Our Story

The Broadway Story
For close to 140 years Broadway Christian Church has been a guiding force for NT Christianity in Central Kentucky. Broadway Christian Church began on May 1, 1870 and is a unique and significant church among the churches associated with the Christian Church, or Restoration Movement.  We trace our roots directly to the leaders of this movement and have played a major role throughout the movements’ history in efforts to unite all Christians on the authority of the Bible alone.

Throughout her history Broadway has been known for her devotion to God’s Word, her commitment for its community involvement and service; and the leader in church planting in the greater Lexington area.

Making a Difference
With a heart to serve the community, for the past twenty years our activities’ building is used as a venue to help feed the hungry of downtown Lexington. God’s Pantry operates its largest satellite outlet from Broadway with our Members serving as primary volunteer staffers during the weeknights as we join together to make a difference and help reduce the hunger in our community.

Transforming Our Community
Broadway’s desire to transform our community and reach beyond her walls has resulted in development of para-church ministries and church plants that continue to make an eternal impact.  Blue Grass Christian Camp has its roots with Broadway.  With the desire to create a Christian Service Camp for youth, in the late 1940’s a group of men from Broadway, along with a few other area churches acquired property along the rolling hills of Boone Creek.  Today Blue Grass Christian Camp has ministered to thousands of young men and women who in turn have ministered to countless others across the globe.

In the middle 1980s the dream of a Christian retirement facility became a reality. In 1975, Christian Benevolent Outreach began its ministry with a gift of land from a member of Broadway, Miss Appolina Sayre.  Sayre Christian Village became a reality with the opening of Baunta Building in 1983.  In 1984 Moberly Manor was added and in 1987, Friendship Towers completed the “Village” as it is today.

Planting Churches
Perhaps Broadway’s greatest contribution to God’s Kingdom has been the establishment of other churches in the greater-Lexington area. Throughout its history Broadway has sacrificially given of its own membership to start several churches that God still uses to do his work today. God has used the people of Broadway Christian Church to help start the following churches: 1890 - Chestnut Street Christian (now Castlewood Christian); 1907-  Maxwell Street Christian (now Gardenside Christian); 1908 - Maryland Avenue Christian Church (later Northern Heights Christian now NorthEast Christian); 1908 - Woodland Christian Church; 1936 – First Christian Church; 1945 – Tates Creek Christian Church; 1956 – Southland Christian Church; 2003 - Iglesia del Senor Jesucristo; and 2004 – Center Pointe Christian.

God’s faithfulness is demonstrated in our past, present and future as we continue to share hope in the city.
